Ingredients
Scale
Pastry
- Puff pastry sheets (store-bought or homemade) – enough to wrap 8-10 apple rings
Fruit
- 2-3 firm apples (Honeycrisp, Granny Smith, or Pink Lady)
Toppings and Extras
- 3 tbsp cinnamon sugar mix
- 2 tbsp melted butter or egg wash
- Optional: 1 tbsp lemon juice (for soaking to prevent browning)
- Optional: caramel sauce for serving
- Optional: vanilla ice cream for serving
Instructions
- Preheat the oven. Set your oven to 400°F (200°C) to ensure it reaches the ideal baking temperature before preparing the rings.
- Prepare the apples. Peel if desired, core, and slice the apples into ½-inch thick rings, ensuring the slices maintain their shape for easy wrapping.
- Prevent browning. Soak the apple slices in lemon water for 5 minutes to keep them fresh and prevent discoloration during preparation.
- Cut the pastry. Slice the puff pastry sheets into ½-inch wide strips, which will be used to wrap around the apple rings.
- Wrap the apples. Take each apple ring and carefully wrap it with the puff pastry strips, tucking the ends underneath to secure.
- Add finishings. Brush each wrapped apple ring with melted butter or egg wash to encourage a golden crust, then generously sprinkle with cinnamon sugar mix for sweetness and spice.
- Bake the rings. Place the prepared rings on a parchment-lined baking sheet and bake for 15 to 25 minutes, checking for a beautiful golden color and flaky pastry.
- Serve warm. Remove from oven and serve immediately. Optionally, drizzle with caramel sauce or add a scoop of vanilla ice cream for a delightful dessert experience.
Notes
- For best results, use firm apple varieties like Honeycrisp, Granny Smith, or Pink Lady that hold their shape while baking.
- Soaking apple slices in lemon juice helps prevent browning but can be skipped if cooking immediately.
- You may substitute the cinnamon sugar with plain sugar and a sprinkle of ground cinnamon if preferred.
- If using egg wash, beat one egg with a teaspoon of water for brushing.
- Serve fresh out of the oven for optimum flakiness and warmth.
- Leftover pastry rings can be reheated briefly in the oven to regain crispness.
