Description

These Cheesy Mashed Potato Puff Bites are crispy on the outside and gooey on the inside, made with creamy mashed potatoes, melted cheese, and a hint of green onions. Perfect as a snack or appetizer, you can bake or fry them to your preferred crispiness.

Ingredients

Scale

Basic Ingredients

  • 2 cups cold or room temperature mashed potatoes
  • 1 cup grated cheese (cheddar, mozzarella, or a combination)
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons milk or cream
  • 2 tablespoons chopped green onions or chives (optional)
  • Salt to taste
  • Black pepper to taste

Optional Add-Ins

  • Onion powder or garlic powder, to taste
  • Paprika or chili flakes, to taste
  • Cooked bacon bits, as desired
  • Fresh parsley or other herbs, as desired
  • Parmesan cheese, for extra flavor

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Mashed Potato Mixture: In a large mixing bowl, add the cold or room temperature mashed potatoes and smooth out any large lumps using a spoon. Add the egg, milk or cream, salt, black pepper, and all-purpose flour. Mix everything thoroughly until well combined.
  2. Add the Cheese and Optional Ingredients: Stir in the grated cheese along with any optional add-ins such as green onions, cooked bacon bits, fresh herbs, or spices. The mixture should be thick enough to scoop; if too loose, add a little more flour to achieve the right consistency.
  3. Shape the Puff Bites: Using a spoon or small cookie scoop, scoop out portions of the mixture and roll each into small bite-sized balls. Place the formed puff bites evenly on a baking tray lined with parchment paper.
  4. Choose Your Cooking Method: For baking, preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C), lightly spray the puff bites with oil, and bake for 20–25 minutes, flipping halfway through, until they turn golden brown and crisp. For frying, heat oil to 350°F (175°C) and fry the puff bites in batches for 2–3 minutes until crisp and golden. Drain on paper towels.
  5. Serve Warm: Serve the cheesy mashed potato puff bites immediately while the cheese inside is melted and deliciously sticky.

Notes

  • You can omit green onions if preferred or unavailable.
  • For extra flavor, mix in spices like paprika or garlic powder.
  • Adding cooked bacon bits or fresh herbs enhances taste and texture.
  • Refrigerate any leftovers and reheat in oven or air fryer for best texture.
  • Flour amount can be adjusted to get the proper scoopable consistency.
