Ingredients
Scale
Sausage and Aromatics
- 12 ounces Italian sausage (mild or spicy, casings removed)
- 1 small onion (finely diced)
- 3 cloves garlic (minced)
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
Main Ingredients
- 16 ounces potato gnocchi
- 1 cup frozen peas
Seasonings and Garnishes
- ¼ teaspoon salt (or to taste)
- ¼ teaspoon black pepper (or to taste)
- ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese
- ¼ cup chicken broth or heavy cream (for a saucier dish)
- Red pepper flakes (to taste)
- Fresh parsley or basil (for garnish)
Instructions
- Heat the skillet: Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat and add the olive oil to prepare for cooking the sausage and aromatics.
- Cook the sausage: Add the Italian sausage to the skillet and break it up with a spoon as it cooks. Brown the sausage fully and drain off any excess grease if necessary.
- Cook the onion: Add the finely diced onion to the skillet with the cooked sausage and sauté for 3 to 4 minutes until the onion softens.
- Add garlic: Stir in the minced garlic and cook for about 30 seconds until fragrant, being careful not to burn it.
- Cook the gnocchi: Add potato gnocchi directly into the skillet. Spread it out evenly and let it cook undisturbed for 2 to 3 minutes to develop golden, crispy edges.
- Continue cooking gnocchi: Stir the gnocchi and cook for an additional 3 to 4 minutes until it is lightly crisped on more sides.
- Add peas and liquid: Stir in the frozen peas. If the pan looks dry at this point, add chicken broth or heavy cream to create a saucier dish and combine everything well.
- Season: Sprinkle in salt and black pepper to taste. Add red pepper flakes if desired for some heat.
- Finish and serve: Remove the skillet from heat. Sprinkle grated Parmesan cheese over the top and garnish with fresh parsley or basil before serving warm.
Notes
- For a creamier dish, use heavy cream instead of chicken broth.
- Adjust red pepper flakes to your preferred spice level or omit for no heat.
- Use mild or spicy Italian sausage depending on taste preference.
- Gnocchi should be cooked in the skillet without stirring initially to get crispy edges.
- Fresh herbs like parsley or basil add a bright finishing touch.
- Ensure to drain grease from sausage if cooking releases excess fat to avoid a greasy dish.
